WIDA ACCESS Placement Test (W-APT)

Disclaimer: WIDA will discontinue the Grades 1-12 W-APT effective June 30, 2019 and will no longer offer support or resources for the 1-12 W-APT after that date. This assessment provided valuable support to our International Consortium educators in making identification and placement decisions for English language learners starting in 2005. However, to address increasingly rigorous language and content standards and assessments, WIDA is replacing the W-APT with the WIDA Screener Paper.

For the foreseeable future, the Kindergarten W-APT will remain available as a secure download on the WIDA International School Consortium website with no changes to current procedures for training, downloading, or administering the test.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact international@wida.us.

The WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test (W-APT) is an English language proficiency “screener” test given to incoming K-12 students who may be designated as English language learners. It assists educators with programmatic placement decisions such as identification and placement of ELLs.

WIDA offers two versions of the assessment: one for kindergarten and another for grades 1-12.

Kindergarten W-APT

The Kindergarten WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test (K W-APT) is an English language proficiency "screener" test given to incoming Kindergarteners who may be designated as English language learners. The K W-APT is one component of WIDA's comprehensive assessment system.

The Kindergarten W-APT does not assign scores across the full range of WIDA ELP levels 1-6. Instead, scores for Speaking and Listening are marked as showing low, mid, high, or exceptional proficiency. Scoring details can be found in the K W-APT Test Administration Manual and on the scoring sheets.

The purpose of the K W-APT is:

  • An aid to identify students who may be candidates for English language support services
  • A measure that provides diagnostic information that may be used as additional criteria to guide instruction and service delivery

Grades 1-12 W-APT

The Grades 1-12 WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test (W-APT) is an English language proficiency screener test given to incoming students in grades 1-12 who may be designated as English language learners. The 1-12 W-APT is an adaptive test that can gauge students' proficiency up to and beyond Level 5 of the WIDA English Language Proficiency (ELP) levels.
The Grades 1-12 W-APT is administered as follows:

  • The Speaking test is administered first, followed by the Listening, Reading, and Writing tests.
  • All components are adaptive, meaning the component in process is stopped when the test administrator reaches items with more complex material than the student is likely to successfully handle. Instructions for stopping a component are included in the test script.

Cost

The cost of the Kindergarten and Grades 1-12 W-APT is included within the cost of the WIDA International School Consortium annual membership. Authorized consortium member educators are able to download and print off this assessment. Please contact international@wida.us if you have questions or need access.
